Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)
If you were to pray this part of the Lord’s Prayer before going to bed one night and your prayer was answered while you slept…how would you know? What would the world be like if God’s will was done on earth?
Take a moment (or two…or longer) to think about it, write it down, or even draw a picture before reading the rest of this post.
Steven Curtis Chapman says it beautifully in his song Heaven is the Face…
But in my mind’s eye I can see a place
Where Your glory fills every empty space
All the cancer is gone
Every mouth is fed
And there’s no one left in the orphans’ bed
Every lonely heart finds their one true love
And there’s no more goodbye
And no more not enough
And there’s no more enemy
Imagine a place…this place…as beautiful, safe, and whole as it was in the beginning. This is where we have decided to start our new worshiping community, our vision for who we want to be, for how we live together, and the way we live in the world. I know we will disagree about what God’s will is. And I know that even when we agree on what God’s will is…we will often disagree about how best to get there. But this is our reason for being, that’s God’s will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.
Creating Beloved Community
Although there is a dictionary full of words that we could use to describe this new community, I think these fit the dream well: Beloved Community. This is the dream of many Civil Rights leaders, that there is a way to live together, where we are all honored, respected and beloved. In the words of the late Vincent Harding, “Beloved Community is something you work at, and work at, and structure. And create as a result of being really in love with each other, and in loving concert with each other, and in loving commitment with each other, to create something far better than we have now. A far better way of being human. A far better way of living in connection with each other. A far better way of creating cities, of creating living spaces, of creating institutions. Of manifesting what love in community could look like, feel like, sound like” (NS Fellowship Vol 76, page 13). This is God’s will done on earth as it is in heaven.

So, what is your dream? If you were to pray this part of the Lord’s prayer before going to bed one night and your prayer was answered while you slept…how would you know? What would the world be like if God’s will was done on earth?
